Wed, 27 August 2008 So it’s clear that today is going to be busy. Even with an 11am start queues are stretching all the way round the venue grounds. Which means when the first bands come on at 11:15am there is only a smattering of people in the crowd. For the uninitiated the Vans Warped Tour is a touring music festival playing 40 odd dates all over North America, imagine a slightly smaller version of Reading or Download which travels around and your on the right track. With 10 stages and around 100 bands there’s a lot to fit in, on top of that you have countless booth’s with all the bands latest merch and sponsors booths all vying for your attention, although some sponsors do go the extra mile. For example The Guitar Centre are providing bands with a web lab to keep in touch with the happenings on the internet not an easy thing whilst on the road and have also provided bands with an ‘Axe Smith’ to help keep bass’s and guitar’s in tip top shape and its all free which is handy for struggling bands, just goes to show its not all about getting your brand across stage banners. Now to the bands! First up is A Day To Remember, after 3 blistering songs things are abruptly brought to a holt, it seems a kid has gone down hard in the pit and the medics have to stretcher him out, this takes a good chunk of the bands set with them only having time for one more song. Next door on the Hurley.com stage Katy Perry takes to the stage, a bit of an odd act for warped, it’s a solid set if not outstanding, with the highlight obviously being ‘I Kissed A Girl’ if for no other reason than to see the female contingent in the crowd do just that. Its then time to head to the one of the two main stages Highway 1 to be precise. Angels and Airwaves take to the stage and go through a set that contains material from both albums with ‘Everything’s Magic’ being a highlight but all you go away thinking is there not a patch on Blink-182, if only they’d get back together. After a quick break its time to check out All Time Low who are being heralded as the next big pop-punk bands with comparisons being drawn to Blink-182 and New Found Glory, its easy to see why drawing a packed out crowd to the Hurley stage, the band are quite engaging to watch and it’s a fast paced set finishing with the summer anthem that is ‘Dear Maria” On Route 66 Reel Big Fish take to the stage to perform a somewhat predictable set but none of that really matters since everyone is doing the fish! With the multiple versions of ‘Suburban Rhythm’ and ‘Sell Out’ being the perfect tracks for a baking hot California day. Next door on Highway 1 Say Anything take to the stage playing one of the sets of the day, with Max Bemis winning over the crowd with equal part charisma and vocal talent. A set drawing from equally from 2004’s ‘Is A Real Boy…’ and 2007’s ‘In Defence of The Genre’ the crowd lap it up with ‘Alive With The Glory Of Love’ and ‘Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too’ drawing the biggest cheers. Back over on the Smartpunk stage Massachusetts five piece Four Year Strong take to the stage, it’s a blinding set with Josh jumping in to the crowd on multiple times and the rise of the amphitheatre helping kids to jump right into the centre of the pit. The band bust through a variety of tracks from ‘Rise or Die Trying’ with ‘Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die’ and ‘Maniac’ going down particularly well. Next up is the surprise band of the day, ever heard of Oreskaband? Nope me neither. An all girl Japanese ska band might sound a bit of an odd one but these girls know there ska, with a musical ability that seems to far exceed there age. With so much energy and a basic grasp of the English language they seem to just be happy to be here and it that happiness seems to infect the crowd. Even with lyrics I couldn’t understand (my Japanese is a bit rusty) it was one of the best sets of the day. I’m a massive fan of Set Your Goals and not having seen them for a year my expectations were high for their set on the Smartpunk stage and thankfully I was not disappointed. A sensational set which included favourites such as ‘Mutiny’ and ‘Echoes’ as well as new track ‘The Fallen.’ Back to the main stage for the rest of the evening and the first of the final three is Motion City Soundtrack. The band pick heavily from their latest album which is understandable although it would have been nice to hear some more tracks from ‘I Am The Movie’ and ‘Commit This To Memory’ other than that minor complaint it was an excellent set from the band which went perfectly with the setting sun. Against Me are up next with there unique brand of folk punk. Maybe it’s because its coming to the end of the day but they don’t seem as good as I remember although the singles ‘Stop’ and ‘New Wave’ do get the crowd moving. Rise Against probably have the hardest job of the evening, with the sunset only the flood lights on either side of the stage make them visible and with all the merch tents and other stages packing up tiredness has set into the remaining crowd and it doesn’t make things easy for them. However Rise Against manage to whip the crowd into a frenzy with their political punk rock and other than the obligatory stop to rant about US politics, singles ‘Give It All’ and ‘Prayer of The Refugee’ get the crowd singing along and it’s a great end to an amazing day. Photos from the day will follow soon!! Category: Reviews -- posted at: 9:12 AM Comments[0] |

Wed, 9 July 2008 How did Farewell get together? The band as you know us now started in 2005. We all met in Greensboro at shows and through parties and stuff. It's funny to think of how many times we crossed paths before we were actually introduced and then started Farewell. We all share a common drive for making the music that we do,soit just happened naturally. How's the Warped Tour going? Had any major dramas? Warped Tour 08 is freakin' amazing. We have had such a good time and we've become friends with some amazing bands. Drama is inevitable when you combine 8 guys, 115 degree weather, no sleep, and a 35 foot RV, but we all get along just fine. Thank goodness for the days off where we can go swimming and have some down time. We did have one rough day in Kansas City when it rained like crazy and ruined a lot of our merch. What happened with your UK tour with Cartel? I am not exactly sure what happened with the tour. We were told that Cartel had to cancel so they could go back into the studio, but then I read that their singer got married during the time the tour was supposed to take place. Regardless, it wasn't our fault and we were gutted that we couldn't go When are you going to tour the UK? I heard today that we may be coming over there in October with You Me At Six. Only time will tell... =) What was the influence for song 'First One On Blog'? The song is basically about how we stick together when things get tough. Our band has had some rough times coming up in the music scene, but we have stayed strong and pushed through, and have made our dreams come true time after time. This song was written for the underdogs, to inspire and push them to want more. What are your views on blogs? We are 100% pro-blogging. I think it's a great way to keep people informed. Lets face it, the internet is SO importan t these days, so why not embrace it. How did you hook up with Epitaph? Brett found our band using myspace, and he really liked the connection between the artwork and the music. He called me while we were recording in Chicago, and the rest is history. We had been talking to labels for 2 years, but finally signed once Epitaph joined the mix. How did you approach writing and recording 'Isn't This Supposed to Be Fun!?' It was a very casual process. We weren't signed when we went to record, so there was no pressure to make a "certain" record. We were just recording the songs we had written so we could get them out to our existing fans. I guess we hadn't really even thought about reaching new ones at that point. How are you finding touring with the cost of gas continually increasing? Thank goodness we have killer merch! haha. Otherwise we'd probably only be able to tour when we're supporting huge bands. I don't think that kids these days have any idea how much it COSTS THE BANDS just to get to their city. It costs us between 80-100 dollars an hour to drive and that doesn't include the six of us getting paid and paying our managers.... SO kids...support bands and buy their merch and Cds! It s so important these days. Who do you consider your influences and peers? We are all huge Green Day and Weezer fans. Blink 182 also had an impact on us as well. I think we're all just fans of good pop music. We try to write music that we'll like forever. I know that our style of music fits into the "scene" right now, but I am confident that our music can outlast the trends of today. The Beach Boys did it, so we can too... What do you eat whilst on tour? We eat whatever we can! Some of us try to eat healthy, but for the most part we eat what we can get for cheap or free! Lunchables are a constant in the RV though. Plus we cookout almost every day, so thats always fun too. Category: Interview -- posted at: 11:04 AM Comments[0] |
